Chapter 3: Ceremony
Chapter 3: The Sect Choosing Ceremony Preparation for the Ceremony Years passed, and Vaughn’s dedication to his training never wavered. He had grown into a strong and agile boy, his dark skin glistening with sweat as he practiced under the blazing sun. By the time he was ten, his skills in swordsmanship and qi cultivation had advanced remarkably, thanks to his father’s guidance and the mystical tree's energy. The day of the Sect Choosing Ceremony was fast approaching. This event was the pinnacle of every young cultivator’s life, offering them the chance to join one of the prestigious sects and further their training. Vaughn had been eagerly awaiting this day, his heart filled with anticipation and a touch of anxiety. "Vaughn, come here," Tim called one evening. Vaughn put down his wooden sword and hurried to his father’s side. "Tomorrow is the big day," Tim said, his voice filled with pride. "You've worked hard for this. Remember, no matter which sect chooses you, your mother and I are already proud of you." Vaughn nodded, feeling a surge of determination. "Thank you, Papa. I’ll do my best." Charlotte joined them, holding a small bundle. "I made you something," she said, unwrapping the cloth to reveal a beautifully embroidered robe. "Wear this tomorrow. It will bring you luck." Vaughn took the robe, admiring the intricate patterns. "Thank you, Mama. It’s beautiful." The Ceremony The village square was buzzing with excitement the next morning. Families gathered to watch as the children of the village prepared for the ceremony. Vaughn stood among them, wearing the robe his mother had made. He felt a mix of nervousness and excitement as he waited for his turn. At the center of the square, a grand stage had been set up, adorned with banners of the various sects. Representatives from each sect stood behind a long table, watching the children with keen interest. The Sect Choosing Ceremony was a critical event for them as well, for it was an opportunity to recruit promising new disciples. One by one, the children were called to the stage. They demonstrated their skills, hoping to impress the sect representatives. As each child finished, the sect leaders would discuss among themselves before extending an invitation. "Vaughn of the Village," the announcer called. Vaughn took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. The crowd murmured in anticipation, having heard of his remarkable progress over the years. Vaughn began his demonstration with a series of sword forms his father had taught him. His movements were fluid and precise, each strike filled with power and grace. He then transitioned into a display of his qi manipulation, forming a small, glowing orb of energy between his hands. The audience watched in awe, and even the sect representatives leaned forward, intrigued by his performance. When he finished, the square fell silent, waiting for the sects' decision. The representatives conferred quietly before the leader of the Azure Sky Sect stepped forward. "Vaughn, your skills are impressive for one so young," she said. "We would be honored to have you join the Azure Sky Sect." Before Vaughn could respond, the representative from the Crimson Flame Sect interrupted. "Wait! Vaughn, we see great potential in you. Join the Crimson Flame Sect, and we will help you become a powerful cultivator." The other sects quickly followed suit, each trying to persuade Vaughn to join them. He felt overwhelmed by the attention but remembered his father’s advice: "Choose the path that feels right in your heart." The Decision Vaughn took a moment to consider his options. The Azure Sky Sect was known for its balanced approach to cultivation, focusing equally on martial arts and qi manipulation. The Crimson Flame Sect, on the other hand, specialized in powerful offensive techniques and fiery qi. He thought about his training, his family, and the mysterious voice that had guided him. He closed his eyes, feeling the energy of the mystical tree flowing through him, and made his decision. "I am honored by all your offers," Vaughn said, bowing respectfully to the sect representatives. "But I choose to join the Azure Sky Sect." The Azure Sky Sect’s leader smiled and stepped forward, placing a hand on Vaughn’s shoulder. "Welcome to the Azure Sky Sect, Vaughn. We will help you reach your full potential." The crowd erupted in applause, and Vaughn felt a mixture of relief and excitement. He had taken the first major step on his path as a cultivator. The Farewell That evening, Vaughn sat with his parents under the old tree. "I’m going to miss you both," he said, his voice tinged with sadness. "We will miss you too, Vaughn," Charlotte said, hugging him tightly. "But we know this is the right path for you." Tim placed a hand on Vaughn’s shoulder. "Remember everything we’ve taught you, and stay true to yourself. We’re always here for you." Vaughn nodded, feeling a sense of comfort in their words. "I will, Papa. I promise." As night fell, Vaughn lay in bed, thinking about the journey ahead. He felt a strange mix of emotions: excitement for the future, sadness at leaving his family, and a burning desire to prove himself. He knew the road would be challenging, but with his parents' love and the strength he had gained, he was ready to face whatever came his way. A week passed and in that time his father gifted him a sword to celebrate his achievements. "Son, the sword would be your life. Do not lose it. Do not drop it. As a swordsman, one must never let go of their blade because the blade is your everything. You'll figure this out as you study under someone other than your father. This is your path, not mine. Your father's right. As a swordsman, one must never part with their soul, no matter what. You must protect it as if it's a part of you. But enough of that. Tomorrow is your big day. How about you talk to your old friend?" He exited the house and went to the tree he planted so long ago. What was the fragment spirit of a master who wouldn't leave him alone? He sat under the tree, talking through the whole night about the possibilities of him ruling the world and gaining power unknown to any cultivator. At the end of the conversation, he bit the tree and said farewell. For tomorrow was his big day. His path and destiny were now set. His journey, unbeknownst to him, would bring him glory.
"Vaughn, I will miss our talks, but know this: you will always have a home here. I swear upon my glory," he said in a calm manner. Vaughn smiled and replied, "Thank you for everything." And with that, his path was set. This journey was unknown, but his heart was steadfast and ready for the path ahead.
